Fleeting: 2013 Oscars Thoughts

Seth MacFarlane… I <3 you. Well there were others that I truly enjoyed, but honestly Seth made the show for me... behind Tina/Amy and NPH... Seth just skyrocketed up my list of award show hosts that I wouldn't mind hosting again in any capacity. And that's probably because my sense of humor is dark and perverted enough to truly appreciate what he did as host of the Oscars over the weekend. Though the addition of - Captain Kirk (the William Shatner version) - Channing Tatum / Charlize Theron dance sequence - Daniel Radcliffe / Joseph Gordon Levitt / Seth MacFarlane Broadway-ish sequence - Be Our Guest... Definitely helped him and the writers (unless he wrote a fair chunk of it himself).

Now I had forgotten that Charlize has dance training, but I knew that Channing was more of a hip-hop dancer… you can see the lack of extensions and polish in Channing’s movement. But as a few of my friends (and me) were critiquing his dancing, one thing I did notice was that he actually had pretty strong partnering skills. He was there for Charlize in the lifts, dips, turns, etc… and that is just half the battle in ballroom dancing… but I digress.

Daniel and Joseph singing and dancing with Seth? O.M.G. that was the cutest thing I ever saw, granted Daniel was glancing down at his feet on occasion, but seriously, what’s not to love?

Oh… and did I mention the “Boobs” song? I know that if I were able to I would have been rolling on the floor in laughter.

Though I’ll admit, using Seth as opposed to a “voice from above” announcer voice was a very good call… a very very good call, if only because that meant more joking and ribbing from him and in my point of view and taste that is perfectly alright by me.

So outside of my love affair with Seth what else caught my attention?

Well there was the chemistry between five of the primary cast members from the Avengers:

Tee hee hee.

Oh and the homage to musicals in the middle of the telecast starting with Catherine Zeta-Jones singing “All That Jazz” from Chicago which appears to be almost a re-enactment of the film… Jennifer Hudson belting out “And I’m Telling You”… but what people were looking for was the cast of Les Miserables singing “One Day More”

Since they probably wanted to feature Anne Hathaway’s voice and Hugh Jackman already sang bits of “Suddenly”, it made sense that Anne sang one of Hugh’s lines from “One Day More” as well as changing a line from Eddie…

Curious? Well originally Eddie was to sing:

I did not live until today.
How can I live when we are parted?

And instead she sang lyrics from “I Dream A Dream”

I dreamed a dream in time gone by,
when hope was high and life worth living.

And I am not entirely sure, but I think Anne also sang bits of Eponine’s part in the final rousing chorus… for me… needless to say… chills.

They also sang live!!! 🙂

During the homage to 50 years of James Bond we were treated to Shirley Bassy singing “Goldfinger”

She makes being an alto so sexy. *drools*

Granted another sexy song was Adele’s “Skyfall” but to me it was admitted not the best performance that she had done to date… ah well, can’t win them all the time.

Finally there was a bit of a friendly debate about who popped up for who was chosen to sing the conclusion of the Memorium… Babs!

I mean seriously… what more could a girl want from the Oscars? I mean seriously… this is why a ticket to see Barbra Streisand live in concert hits $250 a seat.

As a few of my friends have mentioned they were getting chills, and it is only the Oscars! Amen to that.

All in all, I had a lot of fun watching the Oscars this time around… and it fit my strange sense of humor… granted spending it with a great group of friends that also appreciated that sense of humor… well, let’s just say that is definitely a winner in my book.
